Because formula companies want a piece of every baby, even breastfed ones. If you absolutely will not buy their formula, then they make up a reason that you need to buy their vitamins. They hang out with the doctors and "educate" them on the fake need for vitamin supplements in newborns. Can you imagine that? High school graduates with big smiles and shiny hair teaching physicians what to do? And the doctors listen. Anyway, the answer is marketing.

Formula has vitamin K added to it, so it's not normally given to bottlefed babies.

It's usually taken as a preventative measure. All of the hospitals that I am aware of her in the US give a shot at birth to enhance clotting factors in babies, incase they have a clotting problem and prevents bleeding into the brain which can happen 3-7 weeks after birth. Breastfeeding mothers may not be eating enough to pass what is needed to the baby or may be taking a medication that interferes with passing it along. As for your formula fed child, after the initial shot at the hospital (which they could have gave and you didn't notice) formulas are made with high amounts of vitamin K so other sources are not needed.

My son is formular fed and had to have a vitamin K injection when he was born..

It doesn't have anything to do with feeding.

I don't think the method of feeding has anything to do with it.

It's strange that your first child didn't have it. Maybe you accidently ticked 'no' on a form or something.
