Why is my dog not eating puppy food?
alright….i have a golden retriever puppy who is about 3 and 1/2 months old. I’ve been feeding him Performatrin puppy food. Recently i started to boil up some chicken and mix it with the puppy food because he wasnt eating the puppy food alone. I also pour some of the chicken broth in his food. He really likes it. However, sometimes he just picks out the chicken and leaves the puppy food. What to do??? By the way the ingredients of Performatrin are:

Where did you get your puppy from? If you got it from a breeder, are you feeding it the same food that your breeder did? If so, there should be no reason that he isn’t eating it now.
Honestly, I think that putting the chicken and chicken broth in with the food is spoiling the puppy and making him even more picky with his meal, which is why he is eating just the chicken now and not his actual food. You gave him an option. You are the owner and the boss, not him.
What we are doing with our puppy is we have designated meal times. He eats at about 7:30am and 5pm. When it is meal time, his dog dish goes down in the ground (it is not left on the ground at all times) and he is given time to eat. If he chooses not to eat during that time then the bowl is picked up and he needs to wait until when the bowl is placed back down to eat again. Missing a meal will not starve him and he will learn not to be picky and that he either eats when the bowl is down or he needs to wait until the bowl is down again. Our puppy trainer told us this and so far it works like a charm and has really helped stop him from being picky about eating.
My parents did that and then their dog would not eat his food either. The vet told them they needed to stop and let him eat his dog food and that when he got hungry he would eat. But I thought it was a little harsh since they had been doing it for so long. Like the other person said before me use less chicken and mix the broth all over. you may also try a different brand of puppy food it may be he doesn’t like the one you do. with the new food wait until the last week of old food and mix them together so he has a chance to get used to it with out making him sick. Kirra has the right idea although she forgot to tell you how long to leave the food down for. leave it down for at least 30 minutes -1 hr then take it up.
Wal Mart sells this stuff that you pour it on your dog’s food to help the taste. I do not know how well he/she will like it. I have also been told to add salt to dry dog food and slowly decrease salt on food. I have not tried either one of these because my dog will eat anything that will sit still. I hope this helps.
