I'm glad you are taking the effort to do a little research in deciding what is the best food for your pup. I agree, I'm not a big fan of Science Diet, but I'm a lesser fan of the food you described.

Instead of telling you what is wrong with this food, let me tell you about what I look for in a dog food. I think that will help you a lot more.

1) Meat must always be the first ingredient. Meals are okay (in fact, if 1st is meat I want 2nd to be meal - I'll explain). The meat sources must be named, and say the animal it came from. I.E. you know chicken is chicken, but poultry is vague and could be duck, turkey, chicken, or something else. Meat can be as much as 75% water so if you're feeding a dry kibble, that water is removed and leaves a lot less meat. Meat meals already have had their water removed, so a pound of meal will yield more meat than a pound of fresh meat. The more meat in the first 5 ingredients the better. Also, be aware of by-products. They are usually the parts of the animal that can't be marketed much for human consumption. This can be a lot of organs (some are good like hearts and livers, but some aren't as good) it can also include chicken heads and feet.

2) Avoid a food that's primary grains are corn, wheat, and soy. My biggest gripe is they are harder to digest that grains like rice, oats, and barley. Also, be aware of companies that will list a grain in multiple ways (corn, corn meal, ground corn meal, corn grits, etc). This could mean there is more of that grain in the food than meat.

3) Finally, absolutely no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. They've been linked to cancers, organ diseases, and hyperactivity. Also, avoid foods with a lot of added sugar (Beneful, Moist and Meaty, and Bil-Jac are two that come to mind).

Foods I like include Innova, Blue Buffalo, Solid Gold, among others.

Good resources

hills is not a good food which im assuming you know since your switching.... but my rule of thumb is always a specified meat source first (it should say chicken or been not just meat) i also stay away from by products, and grains as much as possible... im not sure the size of your dog or your price range for food, but this is my favorite dog food...

some more good ones are solid gold, canade, innova evo

good luck with your search for dog food, and its a very good thing to switch from science diet, and please stay away from eukunba, pedigree, iams, and any other food you can buy in the grocery store... visit your local pet co or petsmart or a locally owned pet store, they will have a great selection of awosome foods!!!

NO! Too many fillers!!!
First two Ingredients are grains. (Rice, Maize)
Wheaten Bran, Prime Gluten, and Soya are no good in a dog food and are just fillers.
Casein is unnecessary
You can read about Mannaoligosaccharides here
Fructooligosaccharides is a non-digestible sugar
After that I see MORE pointlessly added Ingredients
This is NOT a good dog food at all.

the ingredients are important, but the amounts are equally important. I feed Nutro and , my bloodhounds love it. they're healthy and very shiny. they make an excellent puppy food as well as adult.

You can't just copy all the ingredients and think to find the answer. The poin is in the percentage (%) of these in the food.

Well, it won't kill him but it's far from ideal. Ingredients are listed in order of proportion; i.e. there's more of whatever's first, then whatever's second and so on. In this case, the first two ingredients, rice and maize (corn) are grains. The fact that beef, chicken and fish are next is encouraging, heaven only knows what "poultry digest" is made of but my guess would be fat, beaks, feet, and other parts of the bird nobody else would want to touch. The vitamin supplements are decent and appropriate. Look for something with real meats (NOT meat "by-products") in the first three spots, and avoid anything with "gluten" in the list at all if you can.

there fine. you could try giving your puppy raw chicken mice or turkey mice with some soaked (or not) dry food. which is what i feed my puppy. i also give my puppy sardines once a week instead of mince, it makes there fur soft and healthy. and i also put puppy formula in her food until she is 6 months. remember make food changes gradually as it can up set there tummy's.

i also give my border collie puppy 4 raw chicken necks for breky every morning. it is really healthy for there teeth gums fur skin and there whole body!!!

this is what the breeder feeds all her show dogs!

How old is the puppy? What breed of pup?

Typically if it says 25-30% protein, it's good. Feed him plenty!

I see several ingredients which are not to a dog's benefit.
Maize is corn, which some dogs are sensitive to, hard to digest.
Rice (which is good) and maize are the main ingredients it seems since it appears first,.. the meat is secondary (dogs are carnivorous) .
It may be a good idea to change gradually pup's food to more nutritional and wholesome ingredients brand.
Gd. luck.
