Is nutro natural choice brand puppy food any good?
I haven’t been able to find a lot of info on this brand online. Right now i’m feeding the small bites oatmeal, chicken, and rice formula to my 9 week old miniature american eskimo dog puppy. He seems to be doing well on it, but does anyone reccomend this brand for my pup?

sorry but I don’t buy stuff with big words I do not know.To…many….words!!!!Losing…….mind…!!!!!!I would use Wellness.Only thing I trust so far.
Nutro’s Natural Choice makes a good food and I know many dogs that thrive on it.
I would like to know 2 things….if you can elaborate…where do you live (USA?) and are you in the city or country?
My only concern with the food is that the first ingredient is “chicken meal” as opposed to “chicken”.
Actually…I am going to assume you are either in USA or Canada…
I would recommend a couple of other brands for you to check out (for comparison of ingredients)…
Wellness
Van Patten’s Natural Balance
Oven Baked Tradition
Nutro’s Ultra Puppy
The first 3 are all holistic foods…I don’t quite remember if Ultra is…but my puppy (when she was a puppy) was on Nutro’s Ultra and her coat just gleamed!!!! (Border Collie).
You could also look into Nature’s Variety….it’s a frozen “raw” diet that comes packaged in 1 oz. medallions. It’s expensive but it’s 95% meat and 5% fruit/veg – all natural…..expensive buit with 1 small dog, it’s not crazy expensive….With 4 large ones like I have, it’s too much!!!
Good luck.
It’s better than, say, Beneful… but it’s not great.
Here is my “short list” of rules when I am looking at dog food ingredients:
1) When I chose a dog food, I chose one high meat content. I want to see preferably at least 2-3 out of the top 5 ingredients be meat or meat meal (first ingredient must be!). Meal is simply the meat with the moisture removed.
2) I want to see higher quality grains, such as barley, brown rice, and oatmeal, instead of seeing wheat and corn. Or an alternative starch/carbohydrate such as potatoes or sweet potatoes.
3) I don’t want to see any byproducts.
4) I don’t want to see a lot of fillers (beet pulp, brewers rice, etc).
5) I don’t want to see preservatives that are believed to be carcinogens (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin).
6) I don’t want to see artificial colorings such as the Red, Blue, and Yellow dyes.
7) I don’t want to see added sugars (sugar, corn syrup).
I don’t want to see mystery meats (meats identified only as “meat” or “poultry”.)
Here are some of my top picks for puppy foods:
* Canidae All-life-stages
* Merrick Puppy Plate
* Artemis Fresh Mix puppy
* Innova puppy
* Wellness Just for Puppy
* Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover’s Soul
ADD:
Chicken meal is fine, it’s actually an excellent ingredient. Chicken is about 80% water, chicken meal is chicken with the water weight removed. (Many people get “chicken meal” confused with “chicken byproduct” or “chicken byproduct meal”.)
The next ingredients in this food are what are concerning. “Ground Rice, Rice Flour, Rice Bran, Dried Plain Beet Pulp, Poultry Fat”. They split the rice ingredient into 3 different ingredients, so in reality, most likely rice is the main ingredient, not chicken meal. Beet pulp is a filler. Poultry fat falls into the ‘mystery ingredient’ category because you don’t know what type of bird it came from.

Natural choice is a good food but I don’t trust Nutro anymore due to the problems they had during the food recalls. They are trying to hard to get business and I personally think they are too expensive for the medium grade food that they have.
That being said, I do trust the Nutro Ultra Holistic. It just has a better “smell” to me and it is better ingredients but it too is very expensive.
Canidae was my fave til they changed their formula in a very sneaky way and didn’t tell anyone or put it on their packaging.
SSSOOOoooo, I have found a great food that I’ve decided will be my dog’s new food. Wellness adult. He had the Just for Puppy and loved it but that was when I still liked the Canidae company. I will be mixing the adult and small breed adult together for a mix that I feel is best for my dog.
So in answer to your question, yes it’s a good food but not great and for the same kind of money, you can have the best.
There is better out there. Food labels list the ingredients in order by weight. The first ingredient is good, chicken meal just means chicken with the water removed. When companies list just “chicken” as the first ingredient it is inclusive of water. Chicken is 80% water, so when baked (like dog food is) it really would not be the first ingredient.
The real problem with this food is the grain content. Ground rice, rice flour, and rice bran are all RICE. So if it was just listed as rice, it would be the first ingredient.
Also beet pulp is filler and a controversial ingredient.

It is better than many grocery store brands, but there is better out there. Check out the dogfoodanalysis.com 5 and 6 star foods.
Nutro is a low medium end dog food plus it’s had a lot of issues with contamination and recalls. I wouldn’t trust it.
Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to dump cheap leftovers in. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.
Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.
Thankfully, there are some excellent dog foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption.
Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n’ Bits, Beneful, Ol’Roy.
Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature’s Variety Prairie, Nature’s Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix.
Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you’re getting what you’re paying for. Less filler material means more concentrated nutrients… this means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!
A great option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grainless formulas. Some good grainless diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature’s Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Merrick Before Grain, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now! and Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Taste of the Wild.
Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo. If you can’t find a food, most of the high quality food brands have websites with store locators on them.
Remember that foods should be switched gradually, especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies.
Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:

Nutro is the best cat and dog food there is. Seriously. I had my WH dachshund on Pedigree for many years until he stopped eating it. I found out why. Nutro is the only thing that cleared up his coat problems.

I have fed the nutro natural adult to my dog for the last few years and she has done well on it. It is one of the better quality foods.
