Drs. Foster and Smith Dog food? Good or bad ? (asked 2 hrs ago no answers)?
I asked this earlier but got no answers Hope no-one minds if I ask again….I wont do it a 3rd time..
I am searching for some new food for my 3 dogs…They are currently eating Beneful and was ordering some flea stuff from Fosters and noticed they had dog food. Unless I am missing something the ingredients are the same (the first few at least) as Blue Buffalo.
Anyone care to let me know what you think? Thanks

I know nothing of 2 of these brands, I’ve never heard of them to tell the truth, but the blue Buffalo seems like a safer pick, the fosters smith may have more ingredients but you can’t tell me you even know what half of that is….the blue Buffalo you can tell what ALL of that is so yo,u know what your dog is eating, go with that one it is most certainly going to be the best choice for your dogs. By the way is still in doubt go consult a vet, they could better determine whether it is better or not, but a food that uses fillers such as fosters against a food that doesn’t, i would definitely go with blue buffalo, by the way, I am going to look up this brand and see if I can find it for my dogs, good luck! oh, and pick me! 
you know I like dr foster smith for alot of their products but yet dont think I’d try thier food or at least not switch from what we’re feeding our dog (we feed Merrick brand foods…and highly suggest their products). Merrick products are high quality (5 star food) and well personally I just like the company in the fact that it’s a family owned US company that uses US raised ingredients and they seem to care about people and their pets (they donate a bag a food for every adopted dog at their local humane society shelter) and has a satisfaction guarantee (not that I’ve ever had to use it)
I’d look into merrick and check them out as well..you can find their website at and check out all their products and ingredients, find a local retailer, or even order online (I know someone else I was talking to ordered online from them and said that because he ordered 2 bags they gave him a third for free).. or even if you go to and enter in 5#bag in the promo code they’ll give you a coupon for a free 5 pound bag when you buy one redeemable at a local retailer (granted 10 pounds wont go very far with 3 dogs… but it makes it cheaper to give it a try)
Check out they have a lot of good information and ratings on food. They not only rate it but they explain why certain foods are better than others and what you should be looking for on a label.
When we adopted our adult boxer he was on Merrick, but with bad results, very soft often watery stools and had gas like nobody’s business it was horrible. We were told that boxers tend to have sensitive systems and Merrick is a fantastic food but too rich for some pooches. We switched to Canidae with fantastic results. If you are looking for a great kibble I would highly suggest it, but it will be quite a bit more expensive than Beneful but MUCH better for the dogs. I believe it’s only sold at smaller private pet stores I have never found it in a big box store, so you can support a local small business!
We are actually now converting my boxer over to a raw food diet. This scares a lot of people both because they think it’s difficult and because of the raw meat factor. But honestly I have to say that it’s really not much more work, and you feel good knowing that you are feeding your dog food much closer to what he would naturally be eating. The price per day is comparable to the high quality foods and the extra effort is worth the piece of mind. Our dog LOVES his new diet, has had no issues switching over. Ian Billinghurst’s book Give Your Dog a Bone would be your best resource for more information. As always you should consult your vet or a pet nutritionist with any questions or concerns regarding your pets diet.
Look at the size difference in the list of ingrediants – Fosters clearly has a lot more fillers and additives to bulk up their food. Blue Buffalo looks and sounds so much better, at least you know exactly what each ingredient is rather than “Choline Chloride, Mannganese Sulfate” etc. If you dont know what is actually in the food, would you eat it?!
