?Amy? Akita Mom asked:

Do any of you feed the new Formula to the Canidae All Life Stages?
How are your dogs doing on it?
I just switched from Diamond Lamb and Rice to Canidae All Life Stages my dogs have been on it for a week now and seem to be doing fine. I have a Black Lab mix and a Purebred Akita. And before the switch i was having problems with my akita not eating and now that is she on Canidae All Life Stages she loves it and just woofs it down!! :) And my Black Lab loves any food but she likes the Canidae All Life Stages too! :)

And also i have been talking to a lot of breeders and show Dog people and they tell me they feed Pro plan selects Chicken and Brown rice Dry dog food and they say their dogs do wonderful on it. And they trust Pro Plan and have for years! And i have seen theses dogs and they are Gorgeous!! They are Champion Dogs and are some of the top dogs!
I have always thought that Purina was one of the worst dog foods??

And they tell me they wish Purina was not talked about badly because look at their dogs! They are Beautiful and Healthy!!

So my Five questions are::::
Do any of you feed the new Formula to the Canidae All Life Stages?
How are your dogs doing on it?

Should i keep my dogs on Canidae All Life Stages?

And how do you feel about the Pro Plan selects Chicken and Brown rice dry dog food?

And do any of you breeders, Show people, or just Dog Owners feed the Pro Plan selects Chicken and Brown rice dry dog food and how do your dogs do on the food?

Pro Plan: not nearly enough meat in this food. chicken as the first ingredient is good but its inclusive of water which means it only about 20% of the weight after it is dehydrated. so you would be feeding your dog brown rice, corn gluten meal and other fillers.

i would stick with something better

i would like to see purina dogs when they are 12/14/15/16? are they still doing well?

I don’t feed my dogs the new formula, but I plan on switching to it in the future (right now they’re being fed California Natural and I’m going to start them on Innova next).

You should definitely stick with Canidae!

I would never feed my dogs Purina…

Pro-Plan Selects isn’t the worst food out there but it isn’t the best either…it contains corn gluten meal which is nothing more then a cheap filler. It also is low on the meat protein only having one source, chicken, in the first 5 ingredients..it should have meat protein as at least the first 2-3 ingredients…sure there are dogs that do good on it, but most likely these dogs would do even better if they were on a better food.
As for Canidae ALS it is a very good food..it has meat as the first 3 ingredients, it doesn’t contain corn..the only downfall is that for some dogs it is too rich.
I have used the new formula for my dogs and they have done perfectly fine on it, no issues.

I can tell you that as far as quality & ingredients I certainly wouldn’t switch my dogs from Canidae to Pro Plan if they are doing well on it.

I am happy with switching from Nutro (that used to be a good food before Pedigree Mars bought it out) to Canidae ALS. I had serious issues with my dogs on the Nutro and had to switch and I am pleased with it. I got in after the new formula ( which is where most of the issues with it from other dogs came from – they changed formulas and people were unaware and it was causing stomach upset/diarrhea – just like any other food switch if not done gradually – I admit Canidae should have done a better job of letting people know about the ingredient change. The other issue is that some dogs don’t tolerate grains well – and they added barley and millet – but increased the meat content – so that caused issues for some). As long as Canidae keeps using human grade ingredients – I will keep buying it.

If your dogs like it like mine do and are not having any issues on it – I would stay with it. I thought my Dale (4 yr old Bluetick Coonhound) was looking tubby on it – but my vet said he looked fine and he’d actually lost 4 lbs – she said she liked how he looked and to keep him on it. She also pointed out that – he might look tubby compared to my Reba (3 yr old Redbone Coonhound) I just adopted that needs to catch up with him (she needs to gain at least 5 lbs – 7 lbs). Also – they love the Canidae Snap Biscuits Original for a treat.
